"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm" About Us Our California School for the Deaf, Riverside (CSDR) Class of 1963 website is designed to be a virtual meeting place for the alumni of the Class of 1963.  We also welcome those from other classes who attended during the years we were there as well as faculty and staff. The primary purpose of the website is communication.  It will hopefully encourage and enable communication among the alumni and other interested parties.  The website will also act as an historical repository for class activities, documents and photos. CSDR is known as "Brick Campus" for its architectural style.  Every building on the campus is built with bricks. California building code probably requires it for fire safety.  We as young students felt like walking through the Grand Canyon! The school mascot, CUB, began in 1953 when Dr. Richard Brill, then Superintendent suggested bear.  He chose bear because he did graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley and their mascot was bear.  (See The CSDR Story, page 224-225). He asked the students what they thought of it and they suggested CUB because the campus was young at that time.  Among the students were at least four alumni members started in 1953 and graduated in 1963. Anyone who has material (write-ups, photos, memorabilia, etc) that they would like to share with the other alumni is encouraged to forward it to us at skedsmo@earthlink.net.  If anyone out there can help us find others, it would be greatly appreciated.
